SCHUBERT Introduction and Variations on Trockne Blumen D802 for flute and piano
BEETHOVEN Serenade in D Op.25 for flute, violin and viola
BRAHMS Piano Quartet in G minor Op.25
Trockne Blumen (Faded Flowers) is one of the songs in Schubert’s song-cycle Die Schöne Müllerin, and these Variations are based on the same melody. A brilliant tour de force, they require virtuosity from both flute and piano. Beethoven’s Serenade is a charming piece, while Brahms demonstrates in his grand G minor piano quartet that he, like Haydn and Beethoven before him, was captivated by traditional folk music.
