HAYDN Piano Trio in G Gypsy Rondo
RIES Grand Octet in F minor Op.128
SZYMANOWSKI Nocturne and Tarantella Op.28 for violin and piano
BEETHOVEN String Quartet in C minor Op.18 No.4
Haydn’s best-known piano trio, the Gypsy Rondo, includes a finale that quotes numerous Hungarian folk tunes. The Hungarian influence is also apparent in Beethoven’s moody C minor quartet. Beethoven’s friend, Ries, was first and foremost celebrated as a virtuoso pianist, which is immediately apparent on hearing his florid Grand Octet, a chamber-scale piano concerto in all but name.
