The Fruits of First-Time Composers
As part of this year’s May Festival, Music in the Round and the Platform 4 composers collaborated to host an afternoon workshop in the Crucible theatre for eight participants, some of whom had never composed before. Under the guidance of Platform 4, they each composed and recorded a performance of a short piece inspired by Sheffield’s industrial heritage using a range of instruments, techniques and ideas. You can listen to the recordings on our Soundcloud here: https://soundcloud.com/musicintheround-1.
The workshop gave the participants a better understanding of the techniques and method involved in transforming an idea into a piece of music – Paul Thomas said ‘it was really interesting gaining a deeper insight of the composition process.’
Platform 4 are a group of four emerging Sheffield based composers, all postgraduates from the University of Sheffield. They frequently work in collaboration with artists from other disciplines, such as sculpture and dance, and focus on producing and performing interesting new works. Rosemary Millican commented ‘what a privilege to work alongside such talent! Great day all round.’
We look forward to the next opportunity to work with all of the composers involved.
