Roderick Williams, Singer In Residence presents A Schubert Showcase
Music in the Round’s Singer-in-Residence world-famous baritone Roderick Williams performs a special showcase event with Sheffield schools for the city’s Spring of Singing initiative
A Schubert Showcase with Roderick Williams and pupils from Handsworth Grange & Fir Vale Schools, Friday 11 March, 1:15pm – 2:15pm, Upper Chapel, Sheffield. Free event.
This Spring Music in the Round and Sheffield Music Hub come together to present A Schubert Showcase as part of the city’s annual Spring of Singing initiative. This will be the first in a series of projects by Music in the Round, inspired and co-led by internationally-renowned baritone Roderick Williams and based on Schubert’s three song cycles – staples of the classical repertoire with enduring themes of love, loss, longing and loneliness.
This special showcase event will include 120 year 7 students from two Sheffield schools: Fir Vale and Handsworth Grange who have teamed up with Roderick Williams for an hour-long public performance. Pupils will have already enjoyed rehearsal and discussion time with the world-famous baritone, whose previous prestigious engagements include the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms. Taking inspiration from Schubert’s great song cycle Winterreise (Winter’s Journey), Roderick and the students will sing together, as well as perform Schubert and some of the students’ own compositions respectively. Using a new English translation of Winterreise by Jeremy Sams, the performances will give fascinating insights into the music and poetry of the work.
Peter Taylor, Singing Projects Coordinator at Sheffield Music Hub has led the project, using his expertise to run sessions with school teachers, focusing on singing and interpreting the songs. Composer and animateur Andy Smith (from the BBC’s Ten Pieces) has also led workshops enabling each class to write a new voice-based composition based on one of the songs.
Over the next two years Roderick will be giving a number of concerts in Sheffield as Music in the Round’s new Singer-in-Residence. On 8 May, as part of its annual May Festival of Chamber Music, Roderick will be performing alongside Ensemble 360 for the first time. Together they present a major new work by award-winning composer Howard Skempton, with words based on Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic tale of tragedy and salvation, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. He will also be singing the complete Schubert song cycle as part of an international tour, with his first Sheffield performance taking place this autumn.
