Ensemble 360 and Polly Ives return to the Crucible Theatre on Saturday 5 March (and to Cast in Doncaster on Saturday 16 April) with the fantastically funny new concert for young audiences Sir Scallywag and the Battle of the Stinky Bottom, following two sell out schools’ shows last November.
Based on the new children’s book written by Giles Andreae and illustrated by Korky Paul, Sir Scallywag and the Battle of the Stinky Bottom is the latest book adapted for performance by Music in the Round’s children’s composer in residence Paul Rissmann. Featuring live classical music performed by the world-class musicians of Ensemble 360, lively storytelling by the brilliantly talented narrator Polly Ives, bright illustrations from the book and lots of audience participation, this concert follows the successful format of previous family concerts such as Crazy Creatures, Stan and Mabel and Sir Scallywag and the Golden Underpants.
Over the years Music in the Round have delivered a fantastic programme of music performances and events tailored for families, young musicians, and the local community. They are now thrilled that community participation has reached an all-time high, with around 115,000 participants in Sheffield and across England having taken part in the last 10 years alone.
On Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February, in a String Project for Young Players, musicians aged 5 – 18 have the chance to rehearse and perform alongside 250 other young string players with coaching by the Maxwell Quartet.
Fraser Wilson, Learning and Participation Manager for Music in the Round said about the project: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young musicians to make music with their friends alongside inspiring professional players who’ll give them fresh ideas about their playing and musicianship.”
Music in the Round’s Spring Season also includes further events for families in Sheffield when on Saturday 12 March, Polly Ives and Fraser Wilson present Open Music Box Workshops – relaxed and friendly music sessions in which young children and their parents can sing, play instruments and move to music. Further Music Box workshops and family concerts also take place during Music in the Round’s annual May Festival – this year taking place from 6-14 May in the Crucible Studio.
