SCHUMANN Fantasiestücke Op.73 for clarinet and piano
BRAHMS Piano Trio in C Op.87
DANI HOWARD Ostara for clarinet, cello and piano (WORLD PREMIERE)
MOZART Clarinet Quintet in A K.581
The fascination that Mozart held for the clarinet, and which inspired him to write an inspiring concerto and a quintet featuring the instrument in his later years, can be attributed to his close friendship with the virtuoso player Anton Stadler. One contemporary credited Stadler with “so soft and so lovely a tone that nobody who has a heart can resist it.” Schumann’s Fantasiestücke continue Mozart’s lyricism in a compact suite with contrasting movements, and the clarinet also features in this concert’s world premiere. Dani Howard is a graduate of the Royal College of Music and her work has already been performed worldwide; she is currently composing new pieces for performance in California and New York in Autumn 2016.
