Change to artist for Thursday's concerts (Updated Thursday 15 May, 9.30am)

Sadly, Ensemble 360's Gemma Rosefield (Cello) is still not well enough to perform in today's concerts.

The award-winning cellist, Oliver Coates, will be standing in for Gemma at both of today's concerts. The programme for At the Front is unaffected by this change.

The powerful emotional impact generated by the combination of written word and music comes to the fore in this concert. Masterful settings of the poems of Heine, Matthew Arnold, A.E.Housman and Masefield contrast the joy of love with the pain of separation and despair.

It is the journey between these extremes that shapes Schumann's Dichterliebe (The Poet’s Love), composed in 1840, his 'year of song'. George Butterworth's settings of Housman's A Shropshire Lad date from 1911-12 – poignant songs by a composer died at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, just as he was emerging as an original new voice in English music. Ivor Gurney composed By a bierside and In Flanders whilst at the front in 1917. He was wounded in action and his mental health was shattered by the war.

Pre-concert talk, 6.15pm
Ivor Gurney was an outstanding composer and poet. Professor Tim Kendall assesses his achievements with reference to other First World War poets.
