COPLAND Vitebsk for piano trio
BERNSTEIN Clarinet Sonata
SHOSTAKOVICH String Quartet No.2 in A Op.68

Programme update (Wednesday 14 May, 11am)

Unfortunately Ensemble 360's Gemma Rosefield (Cello) is still unwell and will not be able to perform in today's lunchtime concert. The programme has therefore been changed to include the following pieces:

DUTILLEUX Sarabande et cortège for bassoon and piano

MOZART Piano Trio in E flat K.498 Kegelstatt

Bernstein's Clarinet Sonata will still be performed, as previously advertised.

World tension was at a peak in March 1949 when the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York was the venue for a remarkable meeting of literary and artistic figures, including Aaron Copland and Dmitri Shostakovich, held to demand peace at any price with Stalin. In the background lurked the CIA’s covertly orchestrated campaign to use music and musicians as propaganda weapons in a new kind of war – the Cold War. Also in New York at the time, though not at the conference, was another composer renowned for his outspoken anti-war views – Leonard Bernstein.

Copland's Vitebsk is an early work, a piano trio that depicts the harshness of life in a Jewish village, drawing on quarter-tones as well as folk material, with results that are often stark and austere. Bernstein's Clarinet Sonata is his first important work. It was written in 1941 during a holiday in Florida, and it combines a gentle pastoral style in the first movement with an exciting second movement inspired by the Cuban music that he heard over the radio during his stay in Florida. Shostakovich wrote this string quartet in 1944 at a time when the Soviet victory over the Nazis had seemed certain. It uses folk-like melodies and rhythms that suggest klezmer.

*A transaction fee applies to all bookings made at the Box Office (excluding cash) of £1.50 (£1.00 to online bookings).
