SCHUBERT Die Schöne Müllerin D795
Schubert's song cycle Die Schöne Müllerin is about a young journeyman's unrequited love for a miller's daughter. It moves from the breezy optimism of the opening songs to much darker, more obsessive thoughts as the cycle progresses. It's a remarkable journey, expressed in music that brilliantly captures the drama of Wilhelm Müller's poetry, and the cycle is linked by the constant presence of the brook – the stream that is at first his friendly guide, but which will eventually claim his life.
