String Trio in B flat D471
Piano Trio in B flat D898
Schubert was nineteen when he composed this String Trio, though he wrote just one movement (and started another) before abandoning the piece. This music has strong echoes of Haydn and Mozart, and makes a delightful curtain-raiser to the Piano Trio in B flat, composed ten years later. This is one of the most ebullient of Schubert's mature compositions, prompting Schumann to say that "One glance at Schubert’s Trio and the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again." High praise indeed!
