Quartet in C minor Op.18 No.4
Quartet in E flat Op.74 The Harp
Quartet in B flat Op.130 with Grosse Fuge Op.133
A year into their ambitious Beethoven Project, the Elias String Quartet perform quartets from his early, middle and late periods. The C minor quartet is the darkest of his first set of six, notable for its dramatic shifts and driving finale. The Harp (so named for the pizzicato section in the first movement) shifts from the epic quality of the opening to a finale that is a witty and charming set of variations. The heart-rending core of the six-movement quartet Op.130 is the 'Cavatina' - music that moved Beethoven himself to tears, and the final track on the 'Golden Record ' which went to space on the Voyager spacecraft in 1977.
The Elias String Quartet were BBC New Generation Artists 2009 - 11 and recipients of a 2010 Borletti Buitoni Trust Award. Their Beethoven Project spans four years and sees them performing his complete String Quartets as a cycle. www.beethovenproject. co.uk
