DUTILLEUX Ainsi la Nuit
DEBUSSY String Quartet in G minor Op.10
Ainsi la Nuit (And So the Night) reveals the influence on Dutilleux of Marcel Proust’s writings on memory: throughout the piece he foreshadows and recalls different musical ideas. As the composer himself described it, Ainsi la Nuit is “a sort of nocturnal vision … a series of “states” with a somewhat impressionist side to them”.
Debussy’s string quartet is one of the most important quartets of the Impressionist movement, along with Ravel’s, which can be heard on Wednesday evening. Its lush harmonies are typical of the expressive sensuality of late nineteenth-century French music.
