Start with a reed and a mouthpiece. Add a crook here and a top joint there, and finally you end up with Calefax, a unique and energetic group made up of oboe, saxophone, clarinet, bassoon and bass clarinet that is in demand worldwide for its original take on well-loved music.
In this engaging schools’ concert, Calefax strips music down to its bare bones and shows how sound is merely vibrating air and pitches that can be changed simply by using different lengths of tubing, with a performance on saxophonist Raaf’s home constructed family of “slide saxophones”. Then, with all instruments constructed and in full working order, the group performs an extract from The Music Factory, a mimed musical play for children. There’s also a chance to ask any questions you may have.
