BACH Sonata in G minor BWV 1030
SCHUBERT Allegretto for piano in C minor D.915
YORK BOWEN Sonata for oboe and piano Op.85
MENDELSSOHN 3 Songs Without Words Op.19 (arr. Walter for oboe and piano)
This is a lunchtime recital of beautifully lyrical and elegant music.
London-born Edwin York Bowen was nicknamed ‘the English Rachmaninov’ and enjoyed huge popularity before the First World War, but his overtly romantic style fell out of favour in later years. The Oboe Sonata was written in 1930 and championed by Leon Goossens, who did more than any other Englishman to establish the oboe as a solo instrument.
