Programme Information

The Portsmouth Cultural Trust is delighted to introduce this season’s Portsmouth Chamber Music Series, in partnership with Music in the Round, the University of Portsmouth and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Enjoy an evening of chamber music in the intimate and rather unusual setting of the Portsmouth Guildhall stage.

BRAHMS Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34

BRAHMS Serenade in D, Op. 11

Brahms’ Piano Quintet had a complex evolution; on the advice of the violinist Joseph Joachim the original string quintet was rearranged for piano duet, and it only finally became a piano quintet at the suggestion of Clara Schumann. In the words of one contemporary, the quintet is “beautiful beyond measure…a masterpiece of chamber music of a kind of which we have had no other example since 1828.” A compliment, indeed, to compare this magisterial work to Schubert's great Quintet!

For Brahms’s Serenade, ten players take to the stage to present this elegant early masterpiece, regarded by many observers as an embryonic Symphony.
