Bach’s beautiful and heart-wrenching Sonata preludes a piece full of charming melodies by Carl Czerny, a nineteenth-century Austrian composer and pianist who was greatly influenced by his teachers: Beethoven, Clementi, Hummel and Salieri.

The viola da gamba was one of the most popular of all Renaissance and Baroque instruments. This Sonata shows off its velvety tone, as well as that of the viola on which it is played here.

Celebrating the 150th anniversary of Debussy’s birth, the Lawson Trio pairs his youthful trio with a work commissioned by the group for its Southbank debut in 2010. Inspired by a poem of Sylvia Townsend Warner’s about the poignancy of time passing
